ABOUT

ARIEL JUANA is a duet collaboration formed in 2016 between argentine bassist Ariel Zamonsky and vocalist Juana Pires Rafael. Their music merges jazz, Latin and contemporary music in captivating songs with a particularly distinct sound. Since their debut they have toured Southern Africa extensively, collaborating with prominent South African jazz musicians including Andile Yenana, Reza Khota, Mandla Mlangeni, Yonela Manana and Africa Mkhize to name a few.

In 2020 and 2021 Ariel Juana received Standard Bank Ovation Awards for their performances at the National Arts Festival Makhanda. 

About the individuals

Ariel Zamosky is an Argentine bass player based in South Africa since 2005. He completed his jazz studies at Tshwane University of technology and has been an active member of the local jazz scene since 2012, performing and recording with the likes of Nduduzo Makhathini, Afrika Makhize, Andile Yenana, Sibusile Xaba, Mandla Mlangeni, Feya Faku, Shabaka Hutchins, Sidney Mavundla, and many others.

Ariel has toured extensively both locally and internationally with various projects, performing at some of the most important international jazz festivals including North Sea jazz fest, Montreaux, Juan les pins, New York winter jazz, Montreal, Sydney jazz fest , Pori jazz. 

Juana Pires Rafael is an Argentine composer and vocalist with a distinct beautiful tone. She’s been active in Johannesburg’s music scene since her arrival in SA back in 2016. 

 Through her music Juana seeks to generate new conversations, exploring current issues, emotions, humour and the Oneiric.
