Employees are usually both an NPO’s greatest asset or resource and its most significant expense, which makes the area of payroll a high impact risk. This session will be both a refresher on the basic payroll concepts and an update on the important obligations of employers related to payroll and employees. Even if payroll is outsourced by the organisation, the NPO leader is usually appointed as the representative, carrying the responsibilities as employer. It is therefore vital to understand the implications.

We will consider some of common issues and misconceptions that have tripped up our NPO clients in the past:

  • Critical role and responsibilities of the appointed representative
  • Basic statutory requirements regarding BCEA, UIF, PAYE, and COIDA
  • Standard employment vs part-time employment vs independent contractors/service providers
  • Benefits, expense claims, and deductions and how they impact payroll
  • Concepts of cost to company vs gross pay vs net pay
  • Issues around leave entitlements and termination of employment
  • Employment of foreigners
