What is Limmud?
Limmud is a global organization with events throughout the Jewish world. The Limmud South Africa programme provides the opportunity for anyone in our diverse Jewish community to learn from and engage with a range of top local and international minds, hailing from diverse backgrounds - encompassing politicians, religious leaders, academics, journalists, historians, entertainers and more! With everyone positioned on an equal footing, the result is a unique, enriching, and unforgettable Jewish experience for all.
Limmud will take you a step further on your Jewish journey, regardless of your level of Jewish knowledge or religious affiliation. Choose from over 100 diverse sessions spanning lectures, workshops, text-study sessions, film, meditation, discussions, debates, exhibits, performances.
Limmud events have taken place in the streets of Tel Aviv, throughout the former Soviet Union and even in the shadows of the Great Wall of China, and at the foot of Table Mountain! Our mandate is simple: to encourage and empower participants to engage, connect and share ideas as they embark on their unique Jewish journey.

When:
Limmud Cape Town: Together Again, will take place from Friday 19 August to Sunday 21 August. Additionally, you can choose to come for Saturday and Sunday’s programmes, or just Sunday – or come for it all!
Where:
The UCT Graduate School of Business & the Protea by Marriott Hotel at the V&A Waterfront. 9 Portswood Rd, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town, 8002.
Why the move to local?:
Once again, we have chosen to do a local, urban Limmud Cape Town conference. Besides being more affordable and easily accessible, our new venue opens the opportunity for a hybrid model of either residential or conference-only attendance.
The vital role of Limmud
The vital role of Limmud to the Cape Town Jewish community cannot be overstated. In his Franz Auerbach Lecture (Johannesburg, 30 October 2018) Irwin Manoim said:
“Limmud has managed under a single umbrella to unite for the first time people who otherwise never speak to one another. Progressive and Orthodox, right wing and left wing, Chabbadniks, atheists, Likkudniks, Habonimniks, women in sheitls and women with rings in their noses, Trump fans and Trump foes, one staters and two staters. It is the only safe space in the Jewish community. Indeed, it is the only organisation we have that is capable of fulfilling the Hillel dictum of debate for the sake of heaven.”
Who powers Limmud?
Limmud is run almost entirely by volunteers. All Limmudniks are encouraged not only to learn, but also to pay it forward either by volunteering and/or becoming a sponsor.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors. With the generosity of the donors that support Limmud Cape Town, we can significantly subsidise the prices of all tickets by approximately 50%. As we have done in the past, we are offering a fully unsubsidised ticket for those who would like to further support Limmud Cape Town and sponsor a ticket or a partial ticket for a community member who cannot otherwise afford to come, or for those who wish to cover the cost of their attendance in full.

VOLUNTEERS
Why Limmud Cape Town Needs You:
Since Limmud is run almost entirely by volunteers, we’ll need EVERYONE to help throughout the weekend with all aspects of our event. Research has shown that Limmud volunteers make for a new generation of dynamic Jewish leaders who enjoy being part of and giving back to the community.
Besides obtaining a discount on the cost of registration, by volunteering, you will:
- Build your leadership and organisational skills
- Boost your sense of confidence and self-worth
- Meet new and diverse people in an inspiring environment
- Add work and community experience to your CV
- And most importantly, take one step further on your Jewish journey!
There is much work to be done, whether it be assisting participants with registration, helping participants find their way around the venue, organising lecture rooms, playing with young children – and much more.
In short, WITHOUT YOU - YES YOU, Limmud could not happen!
