ABOUT

SOLD OUT (280 places)

Friends of Kloofendal in association with the West Rand Astronomy Club will be hosting their annual ‘Star gazing in the Kloof’ at Kloofendal Nature Reserve on 6 August 2022 from 5pm to 8pm, a family event for young and old!

What to expect on the night of 6 August

The evening will start before sunset with the planet walk around the amphitheater. The planet walk gives an indication of the scale of our solar system as well as interesting facts about each planet.

This will be followed up with a presentation on astronomy and related topics in the Ecological Centre, followed by viewing through the telescopes that will be set up and manned by the club members. The members will show some of the hidden gems in the night sky and answer the many questions.

The 6th of August sees us coming out of winter and moving towards spring with the constellations Capricornus, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra and Virgo visible in the night sky. Saturn with it’s beautiful rings will be visible. We will also be looking at the moon and it’s features, various nebula, clusters and the jewel box located in the Southern Cross.

Curry and rice, boerewors rolls, pancakes, hot and cold beverages will be on sale. Please note cash only. Dress warmly and bring a torch. Red cellophane (to reduce the light) will be provided at the entrance. For more information please contact Friends Of Kloofendal on (079) 693-5608.

Funds raised go towards conservation and community projects at Kloofendal Nature Reserve, and the development of astronomy on the Westrand.

The West Rand Astronomy club

The West Rand Astronomy club was founded by a group led by Kenny Nevill and Gerhard Koekemoer in 2008 who realised the need for a platform on the West Rand for enthusiasts to get together and share their knowledge and experience. The focus being on outreach, accommodating all levels of knowledge of the night sky.

The Club has a Facebook page (West Rand Astronomy Club) and hosts WhatsApp groups on various astronomy related topics. In addition the club has meetings once a month, either virtual or in person as well as star parties. All are welcome, young and old, from novice to professional.
