Coaching Carmen

Hi there! We are CityVarsity students seeking funds for our 10-minute film titled: Coaching Carmen

We are excited to see our project come to life and we would like you to be a part of it! It is a story about greed, corruption and the complicated relationships we have with the adults in our lives and with ourselves.

Carmen battles for the crown at the esteemed Venus Pageant. Burdened by her alcoholic mother Davina, she seeks support from Mallory - her new eclectic pageant coach

SYNOPSIS

Our story begins in a parking lot where Davina and Mallory strike a deal unknown to Carmen. This agreement entails that Mallory will coach Carmen to win first-place in the Venus Pageant however, Mallory is unaware that the last thing Carmen wants to do is be in this competition. Mallory goes on to coach Carmen for a few sessions- but soon realizes that Davina has been exploiting Carmen for money since Carmen's father left her.

At first, Mallory believes that if Carmen wins the pageant's prize money, Davina would back off and give her daughter room to breathe.Things take a turn for the worst when Carmen does not win the Venus pageant finals. Davina throws a drunken rage before Mallory strikes a deal with her that she cannot refuse. Carmen and Mallory leave Davina behind where they head off to find Carmen's new home.

FUNDING

We are aiming to raise R8000 in order to meet our budget for the 5-day shoot of Coaching Carmen

The money we raise will be used to feed and transport our crew, as well as insure equipment. Set in the world of pageantry, the film requires some production design elements such as posters, sign-boards, costumes, accessories and pageant prizes. We're hoping to secure at least R7000 as a minimum. Any contribution to the project is welcome and all donors will be credited in the end titles of the film.

As students it's difficult to fund our projects, especially the ambitious ones - but we thank you for helping us bring our story to life and letting us make art x

The film will be screened at the end of the year at CityVarsity Cape Town campus. We'd like to invite one random donor to the screening as a thank you gesture.
