Offshore – referring to the prevailing wind loved by every surfer – came into being organically around 2005 when Martin Wolfaardt, Jonno Sweetman and Paul Gibbings turned listening sessions into extended jams – inspired by the masters and by the Knysna forests that were their first audience.

Serendipitous meetings with Buddy Wells and Jonathan Crossley led to broader exposure and an invitation to play the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2008. That year the band released their second album, Incident, featuring Wells and Crossley as well as Marcus Wyatt.

Performances at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival followed in 2011 and 2016 – the band also won ConcertsSA funding for a South African tour in 2016.

The present incarnation of the band comprises Martin Wolfaardt on piano, the inimitable Buddy Wells on tenor and soprano saxophones, beloved Lee (Lips) Thomson on trumpet and flugelhorn, the gentle powerhouse of Jonno Sweetman on drums and percussion and the extraordinarily versatile Sibusiso Matsimela on contrabass. Between them these musicians have graced global stages – from European festivals to Carnegie Hall.

The essence of Offshore is a deep love of music prior to categorization, a mutual respect among the musicians present and a connection to the silence out of which all creativity emerges.

Our session at Origin will range from wistful to playful while always remaining fresh. The core of Offshore performances is improvisation - you don’t need to be a jazz aficionado to enjoy the ride with us.
