Cold Water Capers presented by the CLDSA - Preparing for a Robbenisland crossing

Thu Feb 9, 19:30 - Thu Feb 9, 20:30

On-line

ABOUT

Join CLDSA for our first session of the 2023 COLD WATER CAPERS for information and tips on how to prepare for the iconic Robben Island crossing.

Robben Island lies in Table Bay, some 7.4km from the nearest land and within sight of Cape Town. The Island is of considerable historical and political significance to South Africans and is a World Heritage Site.

The first Robben Island swim was recorded swim in 1909 when Henry Charteris Hooper swam from Robben Island to the old Cape Town harbour, and since then hundreds of individuals have done the crossing from or to Robben Island and various points on the coast.

Despite the relatively short distances (the main swims between Robben Island and the mainland are between 7.4km and 11km) swimming Robben Island has become a challenge even to accomplished swimmers, mostly due to the cold water temperature.

Michelle Petring, an experienced Robben island swimmer herself(28 crossings to date), Skipper and CLDSA committee member will share pointers on training plans, swim nutrition, cold water swimming, official swim registration and other swim logistics that will assist you in preparing for your Robben Island crossing.

CLDSA has been administering registered swims around the Cape Peninsula since the late 1960s
