ABOUT

The Art Club Foundation is a registered NPC that provides support, awareness and advocacy for better environments (education, infrastructure, society, access) suitable for the individual needs for children living with disabilities and special needs. The Foundation has been in existence since February 2022, founded under the umbrella of catering and creating adequate awareness on the challenges faced by children living with disabilities and special needs. The Autism Family Fun Day hosted by The Art Club Foundation is planned to help communities and society gain a better understanding of autism and for families to come together and enjoy interactive activities and a health fair in an ‘AUTISM FRIENDLY’ environment. Through this initiative, which is a first for the foundation, the aim is to also raise funds that will go into allowing the foundation to carry out its operational mandate of advocating and raising awareness on challenges faced by children living with disabilities and special needs and in this instance a specific focus on Autism.

Autism refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communications. Since it covers a large spectrum of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment, autism is now called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with ASD have trouble with social interaction and communication. They have difficulties understanding what other people think and feel. On the other hand, they also find it hard to express themselves using words, gestures, facial expressions, and touch. Children with ASD may feel pain just by sounds, touches, smells, or sights that seem usual to most people.

Others may develop repetitive movements such as rocking, pacing, or hand flapping, may have unusual attachments to objects, may have resistance to change, or may have aggressive tendencies. Because it is a spectrum, some children with ASD are cognitively delayed to a certain degree while others have above-average intellectual functioning. Autism spectrum disorder includes conditions that were previously considered separate autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and an unspecified form of pervasive developmental disorder. Some people still use the term "Asperger's syndrome," which is generally thought to be at the mild end of autism spectrum disorder.

There's no way to prevent autism spectrum disorder, but there are treatment options. Early diagnosis and intervention is most helpful and can improve behavior, skills and language development. However, intervention is helpful at any age. Though children usually don't outgrow autism spectrum disorder symptoms, they may learn to function well in society.
