ABOUT

Join Doctor Rayne Stroebel in a dialogue with Professor Andries Baart as they discuss new perspectives on dementia.

Based on recent research and a new publication Dementie van binnenuit written by Judith Leest, Guus Timmerman, Marije van der Linde, Yvon van Noort and Marjanneke Ouwerkerk.

The research took place from 2017-2021 and focused on what it is like to be someone with advanced dementia and dependent on care. Some people with advanced dementia were followed through a form of shadowing and based on the resulting observations, supplemented by two small sub-studies of professionals and training actors, new language and concepts were sought to better understand the inner perspectives of people with advanced dementia. The Presentie Foundation carried out this research on behalf of Zorgbalans.

Andries Baart is professor of Presence and Care. He is the founder of the so-called theory of presence and the (practice orientated) presence-approach. He is also the impelling force behind the Presence Foundation, a platform for research and practice innovation in professional health care and welfare. His key publication is: Een theorie van de presentie (2001) [A Theory of Presence].

Dr. Rayne Stroebel continued his studies in 2010 and enrolled on a bridging course in Dementia Studies which would give him access to their Master's program. He obtained his MSc in Dementia Studies in 2015 and after a break of one year, started his PhD, which he obtained in August 2022. He is the founder of GERATEC and the Southern African regional coordinator of The Eden Alternative.
