The Selfish Giant

by Péter Louis van Dijk

To celebrate the 70th birthday of the acclaimed South African composer, Péter Louis van Dijk, Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre and HS Jan van Riebeeck are proud to present this special performance of one of the composer's most loved works, The Selfish Giant. Based on the book by Oscar Wilde, with the same title, Van Dijk brought this magical tale to life through his imaginative compositional excellence.

The story tells the tale of a very selfish giant, his wonderful garden, the curious and playful village children, and, of course, the little child who changes the giant’s heart. This work will be the highlight of the evening, performed by the school choir of HS Jan van Riebeeck, the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra and Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Liam Burden, with baritone, Barend van der Westhuizen as the Giant.

Other performances also include the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra rendition of Iingoma by Hendrik Hofmeyr and the hit by David Frost, Winter Games, with pianist Qden Blaauw. The Jan van Riebeeck school choir and orchestra will also form part of the first half of the programme, and baritone Barend van der Westhuizen, will also grace the stage with an aria.

Don't miss this memorable concert of this beloved classic of redemption and forgiveness, and more!!

Ticket sales on Quicket will end at 12:00 on Friday, 24 March 2023. Remaining tickets will be sold at the box office of the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium before the concert.
