ABOUT
Theatre Link 2023 has a total of five plays being performed this year. All of which have been directed by grade 11 Drama students. The programme is a creative and innovative cross-cultural initiative between the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York, Woodside High School in Newport News Virginia, Collierville High School in Tennessee (all in The United States of America), and Sacred Heart College in Observatory South Africa.
The System: directed by Azile Quntana and Minathi Guliwe. This isn’t your typical white picket fence family, on the surface they might seem like your perfect black family, however, there are secrets behind closed doors. A dysfunctional family left to pick up the pieces with the burden of unhealed grief causing a disconnection.
The Interrogation: directed by Angela Ndlovu and Nyasha Jaka. Love cares, love mends, but love also bleeds, and now blood has been shed. Three suspects are found in its midst. The question stands, WHO PULLED THE TRIGGER?
Sheltered: directed by: Elias Gavriel & Mae Phiri. A Struggle Within “the Struggle”. As apartheid South Africa's battle for equality rages on, the lives of Buhle and Junior take a treacherous turn. As they grapple with the decision to return to a life of pain, the conflict resonates deeply with the other children, leaving a great sense of uncertainty in the home.
Weeping Bloom: directed by Tamlyn Hattingh and Khanya Ngosi. A play about a family of four coping with the loss of their son and brother, River. Lailah, the youngest daughter, struggles with her grief and turns to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Throughout the play, River appears to guide her towards a healthier path, but it's unclear if it's too late.
An adequate dose of obsession: directed by David Pyott and Kianga van Oerle. Confined to a single room, locked away from the outside. A group of psychiatric patients each consumed by their own battles, trying to find an escape.
