SKYJACK (South Africa/Switzerland)
Skyjack is what happens when a heavyweight South African jazz trio meets a pair of Swiss reed and brass masters. Over the course of a decade, this all-star quintet has forged a reputation as an innovative and adventurous force in contemporary African and European jazz. Combining deep grooves with thrilling rides and avant-garde experimentation, Skyjack is a powerhouse both on stage and in the studio.

Light Cycle, released 2 February 2024, is the band's third recorded outing and documents a seasoned outfit at its most ambitious and accomplished. Featuring compositions from all members of the group, the album is a multidimensional creature with a big heart and a powerful imagination. Part science fiction adventure, part sentimental journey, ‘Light Cycle’ reconciles expansive cosmic soundscapes with a solid grounding in memory and folklore and will make its African debut at the Prince Albert Journey to Jazz festival.

Issued as a double-LP on the As-Shams/The Sun label, Skyjack joins both a catalogue and tradition of ground-breaking South African jazz dating back to the 1970s. The album's cover features the work of esteemed Cape Town artist Igshaan Adams.

Skyjack members: MARC STUCKI (saxophone), Andreas Tschopp (Trombone, Kudu Horn), Kyle Shepherd (piano), Shane Cooper (double bass) and Jonno Sweetman (drums).

Thandi Ntuli Presents Swiss/SA Collab Band: "A Million O Clock" (South Africa/Switzerland)
Thandi Ntuli negotiates a wide palette of sound and genre which embraces her family lore - a classical singer aunt, after whom she is named; her uncle (Selby Ntuli) who was a member of Afro-rock band Harari; and her grandfather Levi Godlib Ntuli, who fostered among his children a tradition of composing, playing, and singing music together.  That tradition lives on and can be experienced in Thandi’s music.

Spanning a 13-year career, Thandi has carved a unique space for herself with her frank-yet-empathetic and vulnerable self-introspection and that of the world, that has birthed a body of work that facilitates our access to our histories, presents and futures.  For Thandi, music is community, and community care.  Her work is an unapologetic ownership and celebration of all that we are.

Being accustomed to presenting her craft in different formats, the much loved and highly respected South African jazz vocalist, pianist, and composer, will present a special ensemble comprising of some of the artists she met whilst on her studio residency in Switzerland in 2019. Thandi will be putting together a set of compositions and arrangements curated exclusively for the Journey to Jazz programme – “A Million O’Clock”.  Thandi’s appearance at Journey to Jazz is supported by Pro Helvetia.

Women of the World (India, USA, Turkey, Japan)
A five member, all women group of the Berklee Indian Ensemble, performing as Women of the World, under the leadership of Annette Phillip. Founded in 2011 by Annette, the first Indian musician appointed as a faculty member at Berklee College of Music, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is a world renowned collective, known for its global Indian sound that honours traditions while boldly experimenting with a cross pollination of genres, cultures, and multidisciplinary art forms.

A viral sensation with over 300 million views (accounting for 76% of Berklee’s total YouTube views), the Ensemble was in such high demand globally that it organically transitioned into a professional band in 2021, marking the Ensemble’s ten-year anniversary. This pro entity is led by 11 full-time members representing India, Jordan, Iraq, Is Israel, Nigeria, Indonesia, Norway, the USA, and other regions across the globe.

In a world that is highly divided, Philip sees the band’s function as one of bridge-building; a free-wheeling approach to musical cultures that prioritises the people who make them, rather than the restrictions of genre or form.

Women of the World band members are Ayumi Ueda (Japan), Annette Philip (India), Stacy Rene Erenberg (USA) Heiraza (Turkey) and pianist/keyboardist and her name is Hinako Sato (Japan).

Giuliette Price (South Africa)
Originally from Johannesburg, Giuliette Price wasted no time in making her mark in Cape Town's jazz scene since her 2021 relocation. Currently in her final year at UCT's South African College of Music, she's not only frequently gigging but also fostering community through her role as founder of the ii V I Jazz Jam at Barleycorn Music Club. Giuliette's performances at esteemed venues like The Blue Room, UCT Jazz Festival at The Baxter Theatre, and Makhanda Standard Bank Jazz Festival have solidified her reputation as a rising jazz star.

As a soloist at the inaugural Journey to Jazz Festival in 2023, Giuliette captivated audiences with the UCT Little Big Band. Now, she's poised to bring her original project to the Journey to Jazz line-up, aiming to blend jazz harmony with popular music to broaden jazz's appeal. With her solo project featuring young jazz talents, Giuliette is set to breathe new life into the genre, making it accessible to a wider audience. She's thrilled to be part of the festival's line-up and looks forward to sharing her passion for jazz with audiences.

FVH MOHAIR STUDIO VOORDEUR COLLECTION
JOURNEY TO JAZZ 2024 FEATURED ARTIST: FRANCES VH (SA)
A woven, textile fabrication for the walls, doors, blooms and everyday happenings on Botterblom Straat. Made by women artisans for the front doors of the homes of friends, family, a distant cousin and that friend-of-a-friend you greet, but who has never invited you to ‘stoep sit’. This collection celebrates everyday life - her moods, the off days and the on, the cracks and the repairs, but mostly the humour, collective spirit and roadside chat that gets stuck to the pavements and clings to the gutters when the rains fail to come.
This work weaves together curtains that hover over the gap in the wall that makes space for the ‘Voordeur’, the door we use as a physical divide for who and what we let in and that which we would rather keep out.
Every stitch, woven line, gap, thread, and tassel of these works have been deliberately placed by the team of women that make up Frances V.H Mohair Textile Studio.
There will be a rare opportunity to join the FVH artisans in the studio for a walk through of the making space and collection on Friday and Saturday morning. Tickets are limited so make sure you book!

PRINCE ALBERT GALLERY TOUR
Join Mary Ann Botha on a walk through the gallery with special focus on the current exhibitions:

Wehrner Lemmer's sculptures "The Glistening Earth"
The works, in their bold metal structure and striking colours, mimic the perfect balance found in nature, albeit much simplified. The shapes one sees continuously evolve, moving forward forcing itself upward, outward into life – whether invited or not. Wehrner wants to portray the intense calmness that nature affords him. “The tubular curves present in many works are representative of the cycles of life around us, especially those at work in the natural world. The continuous changing of the seasons, the season of life that I find myself in right now, underlie the expectation and the reward of what lies ahead.”

Johan Bloom's abstract landscapes "Landscape of Awe - The Swartberg Series"
Abstract paintings that draw its inspiration from Nature and our relation to it, or rather In it. The arid, dry and dramatic landscapes of The Karoo with unexpected Green oasis with rich biodiversity, teeming with life. We all stand in Awe.
