ABOUT

You are invited to discover rare and riveting music as Piet Koornhof (violin) and Jana Mathee (piano) take centre stage to perform three diverse sonatas for violin and piano from the USA, France, and the Soviet Union.

Beginning with Robert Russell Bennett’s “A Song Sonata”, a piece known for its lyrical melodies and intricate harmonies, the programme will also feature Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s captivating Sonata No. 5, a composition acclaimed for its evocative themes, rich harmonic textures, and profound depth. The evening will be concluded with Francis Poulenc’s sonata, celebrated for its unique blend of ferocity, charm and elegance.

The recital takes place on Tuesday 16 April 2024 at the NWU School of Music Conservatory Hall, at 18:30. This concert will be Ms Mathee’s fourth and final concert examination recital for the partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree Doctor of Music in Music Performance (D.Mus.).
