Benjamin Jephta Sextet presents ‘Born Coloured, not Born-Free’ live at the Untitled Basement
Akoustik Elektrik Music and renowned jazz bassist and composer Benjamin Jephta presents “Born Coloured, not Born-Free” with his Sextet live at the Untitled Basement this Freedom Day on the 27th April 2024. The album, which released in June 2023, reflects on his experience as a so-called “Coloured” in post-Apartheid democratic South Africa.
Accompanied by an ensemble of celebrated local musicians, the performance serves as a poignant journey through his profoundly personal endeavour. Anticipate a vibrant fusion of traditional South African genres such as Ghoema/Cape Jazz and Marabi, alongside contemporary African music styles including Gqom, kwaito, and hip-hop.
The ensemble features Mark Fransman (piano), Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums), Gontse Makhene (percussion), Linda Sikakhane (sax) and Darren English (guitar). Anticipate a vibrant fusion of traditional South African genres such as Ghoema/Cape Jazz and Marabi, alongside contemporary African music styles including Gqom, kwaito, and hip-hop.
