About Youth Day:

On June 16, 1976, a pivotal moment in South Africa's history unfolded during the Soweto Uprising. Thousands of black students took to the streets of Soweto to protest against the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in schools. The apartheid government responded with violence, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of students, including the iconic image of Hector Pieterson, a 13-year-old boy shot by police.

This tragic event marked a turning point in the struggle against apartheid, galvanizing international condemnation and sparking further resistance within South Africa. June 16th subsequently became known as Youth Day in South Africa, a day to honor the courage and sacrifice of the youth who fought for freedom and equality.

A Day with Amai Luminary:

Amai Luminary's event on June 15th, 2024, at Hector Pieterson Museum, Uncle Tom's Hall, offers an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Youth Day and the role of today's youth in shaping the future of South Africa. The event promises a range of wholesome and mindfulness activities designed to inspire introspection and thoughtful consideration of the legacy we wish to leave behind. 

Guests will Participate in:

• Yoga and Meditation to promote holistic well-being, 
• Followed by a guided tour of the Hector Pieterson Museum to delve into the history and significance of the Soweto Uprising, 
• A delicious lunch will be provided, offering a chance for participants to connect and engage in meaningful conversations, 
• The day will end with a brief walk to the Hector Memorial Park, where guests have an opportunity to check out the Museums' market, which sells African artifacts and apparel.
