ABOUT

SHORTS_NA_LESSU

Introduction
This is a fusion of the modernity and ancient dimensions, best thought of as OUR ROOTS AND PARADIGMS OF MODERN LIVING.
The fusion also unites the western culture to our African traditions to form an afro-urban culture of life, SHORTS NA LESSU (Sho’na_le) with several dimensions including, entertainment, medicine/herbs, education, food, automobile to mention but a few.

Background
Culture refers to the customs and beliefs, art, way of life and social organization of a particular country or group. It could also be understood as group or country with its own beliefs.
Shorts_na_lessu is an afro urban concept established to fuse a number of life characters and make meaning of life. As culture is a way of life, this particular concept looks into the development of a mindset that taps into the futurism and ancient way of living entailing speech, thought and action, dress code and behavior as a whole. Therefore to have a culture, is to have a way of life.
Shorts_na_lessu can also be understood as a merge of western culture and African culture. This cuts across dimensions of life, including fashion, music, agriculture, education, health, automobile, art, construction, social lifestyle and many others.
Shorts in terms of fashion are pants that end above the knee, according to the Oxford University Press. This type of fabric was first seen in 1900s when North American boys began wearing knickerbockers, while short pants became more popular in Europe. In the 1930s, shorts started to be worn for casual comfort. (E.g. outdoor and athletic activities) by both men and women.
Lessu is a fabric made from the kitenge or chitenge, which is an East African, West African and Central African fabric similar to sarong, often worn by women and wrapped around the chest or waist, over the head as a headscarf or as a baby sling.
Lessu (Kitenges) are similar to kangas and kikoy, but are of a thicker cloth and have an edging on only a long side. Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo are some of the African countries where Kitenge is worn.
The printing on the cloth is done by a traditional batik technique. These are also known as wax prints and design is equally as bright and detailed on the obverse side of the fabric.
The two fabrics Shorts and Lessu represent diverse cultures, therefore the fusion of the two brings together a whole new concept (culture).
