UCT Graduate School of Business, Protea Marriott Breakwater Lodge, Waterfront, Cape Town

ABOUT

What is Limmud?

Each year, Limmud is held in many countries throughout the world. The Limmud South Africa programme provides the opportunity for anyone in our diverse Jewish community to learn from and engage with a range of top local and international minds, hailing from diverse backgrounds - encompassing politicians, religious leaders, academics, journalists, historians, entertainers and many more!  With everyone positioned on an equal footing, the result is a unique, enriching and unforgettable Jewish experience for all.

Limmud will take you a step further on your Jewish journey, regardless of your level of Jewish knowledge or commitment to Jewish life. Choose from over 120 diverse sessions spanning lectures, workshops, text-study sessions, film, meditation, discussions, debates, exhibits, performances.

Limmud events have taken place in the streets of Tel Aviv, throughout the former Soviet Union and even in the shadows of the Great Wall of China, and now, for the first time ever, at the foot of Table Mountain! Our mandate is simple: to encourage and empower participants to engage, connect and share ideas as they embark on their unique Jewish journey.

LIMMUD SOUTH AFRICA:  CAPE TOWN  CONFERENCE DETAILS:

Limmud 2019 will once again be a highlight of the Jewish communal calendar and this year, our 14th conference, is about creating your own, tailor-made experience!

Limmud is kosher and Shabbat friendly.

When :

From 12h00 on Friday 23 August - 17h00 on Sunday 25 August. You’re invited to come for the full weekend or just for the day on Sunday.

Where:

The UCT Graduate School of Business & the Protea by Marriott Hotel at the V&A Waterfront.

Why the move to local?

Capacity constraints at our traditional Stellenbosch venue ultimately necessitated the move to the centre of Cape Town. Thus, besides being more affordable and easily accessible, our new venue opens the opportunity for a hybrid model of either residential or conference-only attendance.

Why go residential?

We strongly encourage Limmudniks to stay over at one of the three hotels on offer at affordable rates, for a Shabbat friendly, comprehensive Limmud experience. This way, you will have the unique opportunity to mingle with like-minded people, exchange thought-provoking ideas and make many new friends.

  • Kosher meals, refreshments and parking are included in all ticket options.
  • Featuring a unique, session-free Erev Shabbat dinner and communal Shabbat lunch experience.

The vital role of Limmud

The vital role of Limmud to the Cape Town Jewish community cannot be overstated. In his Franz Auerbach Lecture (Johannesburg, 30 October 2018) Irwin Manoim said:

“Limmud has managed under a single umbrella to unite for the first time people who otherwise never speak to one another. Progressive and Orthodox, right wing and left wing, Chabbadniks, aetheists, Likkudniks, Habonimniks, women in sheitls and women with rings in their noses, Trump fans and Trump foes, one staters and two staters. It is the only safe space in the Jewish community. Indeed it is the only organisation we have that is capable of fulfilling the Hillel dictum of debate for the sake of heaven.”

Who powers Limmud?

Limmud is run almost entirely by volunteers. All Limmudniks are encouraged not only to learn, but also to pay it forward either by volunteering and/or becoming a sponsor.

  • Limmud is largely sponsored and therefore able to offer subsidised tickets.
  • Limmud traditionally supports the attendance of young families in its subsidy policy.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors. Their generosity results in a subsidy of approximately 50% per ticket. This year, for the first time, we are offering an unsubsidised ticket for Limmud attendees who wish to cover the full cost of their attendance.

VOLUNTEERS

WHY LIMMUD NEEDS YOU:
Since Limmud is run entirely by volunteers, we’ll need EVERYONE to help throughout the weekend with all aspects of our event. Research has shown that Limmud volunteers make for a new generation of dynamic Jewish leaders who enjoy being part of and giving back to the community.

Besides obtaining a discount on the cost of registration, by volunteering, you will:
*Build your leadership and organisational skills
*Boost your sense of confidence and self-worth
*Meet new and diverse people in an inspiring environment
*Add work and community experience to your CV
*And most importantly, feel like a mensch!

There is much work to be done, whether it be assisting participants with registration, helping participants find their way around the venue, organising lecture rooms,  playing with young children – and much more. In short, WITHOUT YOU - YES YOU, Limmud could not happen!

To register, please tick one of the following options, and we will let you know the date, time and specific task you have been allocated, closer to the time :

Student discount of 10% - 2 hours volunteering over the course of the weekend
Adult discount of 10%    - 2 hours volunteering over the course of the weekend
