Mount Kilimanjaro
ABOUT
Our Purpose
Mental health and, consequently, mental illness impact everyone. All of us know someone with
mental illness, a significant other, a family member or a friend. Many of us even face mental illness
ourselves. This is your opportunity to get involved. To say enough is enough. We stand together for
mental health.
This proposal illuminates our cause and fundraising initiative needed for our quest to summit Mount
Kilimanjaro this year, 9 – 16 July 2019. We aim to create awareness, raise funds and challenge the
current perspective around mental illness. Our motto is “Going up for those who are Down” and
every step of our journey will be a step forward for those who struggle with Mental Illness.
Depression and anxiety, bipolar disease, ADHD, OCD, Substance abuse, Trauma and PTSD.
The goal of this NPO is to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. The Kili Perspective fights
for Mental Health awareness, compassion and understanding. Mental Illness is often times easily
dismissed by those who do not understand it. The diseases that fall under Mental Illness are often
stigmatised and dismissed as a lesser struggle and this worstens the devastation of its effects on its
sufferers as well as their loved ones. We strive to be a voice for those who are valiantly fighting, the
ones that are tired of fighting and the ones who can fight no longer.
SADAG is Africa’s largest mental health support and advocacy group and has rural outreach
programmes in place that makes rural mental health accessible to more people than ever before.
Our group will summit Mount Kilimanjaro in July 2019 for mental illness awareness. We are a group
of 4 individuals that will be climbing together.
1. Rudi van Zyl 2. Claire Nel 3. Keith Strang 4. Aiden Strang
Rudi van Zyl is an award-winning videographer and the director of Pie in the Sky Multimedia.
Together with Claire, Keith and Aiden, Rudi aims to document and capture the climb. Rudi is
passionate about charitable organizations and has been actively involved with various projects while
running Pie in the Sky full time. He has been a part of Project Emfuleni, as well as Regina’s Legacy to
provide support in poor communities and to bring hope to disadvantaged children’s lives. The
struggle with Mental Illness, however, is a cause very close to Rudi’s heart and the endeavour to
summit Mount Kilimanjaro for Mental Illness awareness is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
If you want to get involved, please click the link and donate. We need your donations to be able to
go up for those who are down.
We need to raise R 50 000 as fast as possible. Together, Rudi & Claire will raise funds for SADAG in
order to support this group for the amazing work that they do in our community. We also need to
raise funds for the climb itself. You can have a look at the Facebook Page as well as the Instagram
feed.
