This Fund was established at the end of 2004, so has been in existence for almost 14 years, and as we are making every effort to raise Funds for this in order to be in a position to sponsor more children, it would be beneficial to include some information about Kate and why the Bursary Fund was established.

Kate was born on 7 November 1991. She was a pupil at St Paulus from Pre-School until her untimely death in an accident in her Grade 7 year, on 4 September 2004, shortly before her 13th birthday. She was the school’s Headgirl at the time. After this tragic event, it was the friends of the Jenkins family in conjunction with the school, who set up the Kate Jenkins Trust Fund in her memory.

Kate epitomised what it means to fully reflect the school’s ethos, in her kindness, warmth and humility. Although she was multi-talented, it never led her to believe that she was better than others, and although she was an accomplished young sportswoman, the will to win never eclipsed her spontaneous will to care for others. At one of the matches she was in line to score a winning goal in the Open Hockey Team and she abandoned this in order to help a child from the opposing team who had been unintentionally injured by another player. Kate lived our maxim: Win gracefully and Lose graciously, in everything she did. She was also born into a family which was fiercely committed to justice and she readily accepted all people of all races, creeds and cultures and accepted that difference is a gift which enriches us and which does not ever make one inferior or superior to another.

It is very important for us at St Paulus to promote equity and not to become exclusive. It is for this reason, due to the crisis in education and the rising cost of independent education as a result of the fact that it is not subsidised, that the Board made the commitment to grow a Bursary Fund in order to be in a position to:

  • Offer short-term financial assistance to enable a pupil to remain at the school when due to circumstances beyond the parents’ control, fee payment cannot be honoured
  • Ensure that we reflect the demographics of our country racially and financially by offering part bursaries which will enable a pupil to have access to St Paulus.

As our school has a unique ethos which we want our children to embrace and as Kate Jenkins reflected this ethos spontaneously in the manner in which she embraced our motto, Veritas – Truth and in the way in which her every action reflected: “Respect for Self and Others;” the Jenkins family was asked if we could grow our original Bursary Fund and name this after Kate. They were supportive of this as it would be a way of keeping Kate’s memory alive but also as the need to make quality education more accessible and to ensure diversity within our school are objectives close to Ivor and Karin Jenkins’ hearts.

Our PTA 2019 has committed to holding a 3-course Dinner and Donkey Derby, after covering costs, all proceeds will be donated to the Kate Jenkins Bursary Fund. In order for them to be able to raise as much money as possible, we are appealing to those of you with businesses who are in a position to take a table to book one (tables seat 10 people) and bring your friends and/or business associates or staff members to the event. The PTA is also appealing for donations of certain items. They are specifically looking for exciting prizes for a raffle which will take place on the night. Please support this venture if you are in a position to do so and help us to grow the Kate Jenkins Bursary Fund.

Companies are also invited to sponsor a race, which will include advertising opportunities. This is at a cost of R2,000 per race sponsored.
