ABOUT

Join Dave Reynolds & Pops Mohamed for an up close and personal show at a private house in Claremont on Sunday 1st Dec.

Pops Mohamed is South Africa’s leading cross-over indigenous artist. He has been awarded three lifetime achievement awards: The Nedbank Arts & Culture Trust, Metro FM’s Mzansi Jazz Awards and a SAMA Lifetime Achievement. About twenty four years ago, he took the decision to perform exclusively on traditional African instruments: the kora (21 string West African harp), the mbira (thumb piano) and the San mouth bow. The next album he recorded, ”Ancestral Healing” reached number four on the World Music Charts of Europe and has recently been re-released on vinyl.

Dave Reynolds is South Africa’s leading steelpan player, an acoustic guitarist and also plays Paraguyuan harp. He has performed and recorded all over the world with the late Hugh Masekela, Andy Narell, Gito Baloi (of Tananas), Rebecca Malope, Tony Cox, Steve Newman (of Tananas), the late Sipho Gumede and Paul Hanmer to name a few. His solo album “The Light of Day” was nominated for four SAMA, including Best Classical or Instrumental Album. He has two children: Paco (12) plays steelpans and drums and Juba (11) plays guitar, bass, harp and sings.

Dave & Pops have done over 200 concerts together. Their latest album, “Live in Grahamstown” was recorded at the standard Bank Jazz Festival and was then nominated for Best Jazz Album at the SAMAs. Last year they composed music for “!Khwattu”, a documentary about the centre located just an hour outside CT (near Langebaan) where San culture is taught and celebrated. A month ago they composed the music for “San Dance”, a documentary celebrating the rituals and ceremonies of the Kalahari San.
