Feed A Rural Home

About

The outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) affects everybody in the world negatively in different ways. South Africa can be divided into social classes such as all other countries and although many can agree that the nationwide lockdown (that was implemented from the 27th of March 2020) has everyone’s interest at heart, it has made the lives of non- essential workers even more difficult than they were prior to this pandemic. In the deeper rural areas, the effects of the lockdown are felt more than in any other area.

This is mainly because the people who stay in these areas usually live from hand to mouth and do not have the luxury of working from home or getting paid leave. If they did not work, they will not have food for themselves and their families. It has been more than a full month without work which entails that they are in need of food relief.

Enactus UKZN has developed a web based application called SmartGro, which enables households in the vicinity of Durban to purchase their groceries without leaving their homes. The service promotes social distancing. Enactus UKZN is also collaborating with Bright Future Leaders, a Non-Profit Organisation owned by Noluthando Mnguni in a campaign called #Feed A Rural Home.

The campaign aims to assist the people who live in deep rural areas to go to bed with food in their stomachs during this lockdown. This is being done by raising funds on various platforms including social media. Once there are enough funds acquired, essential food items will be purchased on behalf of the most needing homes.
